In my essay I am going to be talking about if the merchant in Venice is anti-Semitic. anti-semitism is racism against Jews the Christians made the Jews live in the Jewish ghetto because they believed that they were less human.
The first exsample of anti-semi in the is when Antonio the Christian spat on Shylock the Jew.I know this because in the play Shylock the Jew said “you spat on my Jewish garbadine” and that in venishen time meant that he spat on him. because the Christian’s treat the Jews as a lower class as them in the merchant of Venice. Antonio the Christian also called Shylock the jew a dog I also know this because Shylock said ” you call me dog ” which means you called me a dog and that means that the Christian see the Jews as the same class as dog or that they should be treated the same as a dog. The Christians also said that the Jews where only allowed to be money lenders and that’s the lowest class job that there was.
Shakespeare describes the play as a comedy but if the play is a comedy in the play that are constantly making out that the Jews are a lower class then the Christians by basically cussing the Jews by saying they are a dog and spitting on them and giving them the lowest class job that there is ( money lending ) and if Shakespeare is making the play out to be a comedy he is saying that being anti- Semitic is being funny.
The stereo type that Jews love money is portrayed in the merchant of Venice when Shylocks daughter and his money are both stolen most people would be more consernd about there daughter but Shylock was more consernd about his money then his daughter.
